We've received an enthusiastic response to our announcement of Applicon's 40th-anniversary reunion. Over just 10 days, we've received responses from approximately 120 alumni for whom we have e-addresses. At present:
54 plan to attend (including guests, total headcount is 73)
47 are interested, but can't yet commit to attend
9 unable to attend
While replies continue to trickle in, your reunion committee is busy making this event the best it can be:
- Our new website -- http://www.appliconreunion.com/ -- will serve as a focal point for reunion planning.
- Research is underway to identify the most comfortable, cost-effective venue for our event.
- A snail-mail campaign is planned for late March to reach alumni for whom we don't have e-addresses.
We need your help, too:
- Help us spread the word about the Applicon 40th Anniversary Reunion on September 25.
- Visit http://www.appliconreunion.com/ often for updates on progress, prices, and registration process.
- Send e-mail to info@appliconreunion.com if you have information about how to reach missing alumni.
We welcome your involvement and appreciate any suggestions you have to help make this the best reunion ever.
Thank you!

Renewing old friendships and acquaintances is fun and easy at our new Applicon Alumni Discussion Group at Yahoo! If you choose to become a member of this group, you will have instant access to:

- Member polls and shared links

Last week, we launched a snail-mail campaign to target Applicon alumni for whom we have no e-addresses. Replies have started to arrive, and we're very encouraged by the strength of the response and the small amount of undeliverable mail returned by the US Postal Service.
While it's likely that more than 200 Applicon alumni and guests will attend the reunion on Friday, September 25, we encourage you to continue to spread the word and ask missing alumni to make themselves known via the Applicon Reunion website: http://www.appliconreunion.com
Your reunion committee's next task is to identify and secure a suitable venue for this event. We are looking at facilities in the Burlington, Mass., area with enough tables and chairs to enable attendees to sit comfortably as they chat and enjoy food from a casual buffet and beverages from a cash bar. Our objective is to provide an environment that is conducive to discussion, with quality food at a reasonable price.
One more thing ... We'd like to share old Applicon photos with reunion attendees, and we need your help. If you have good-quality hardcopy photographs or 35mm slides of people from Applicon, please snail-mail them to us for reproduction. We promise to return them to you promptly. If you're attending the Applicon reunion, you may also be interested in participating in this year's FedCup Golf Tournament, organized by Joanie Nevins.
For the last four years, a small but loyal band of Applicon alumni has participated in a golf tournament called the FedCup to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Foundation in memory of Don Feddersen who was taken from us in 2005. This year, we are hoping our numbers will grow by planning to hold the 5th Annual FedCup on the day of our reunion, Friday, September 25th.
We plan to play at either Granite Links in Quincy or RedTail in Devens, Massachusetts, each about 40 minutes from Burlington. In order to book a venue, we need to know how many golfers will participate. Assume the cost per golfer will be about $100, and we ask for a $50 donation to Dana Farber in addition. The only prizes we offer are:
1. Winner's name engraved on the FedCup (yes, we have a real trophy donated by Steve Cheheyl and already bearing the names of Dave Miller, Bob MacCormack, Cathy Feddersen, and Tom Genova as past winners) and
2. A really good feeling that you have done something to support Don's memory and may be contributing the actual money that finally delivers a cure for the cancer that took Don and affects so many lives every year.
If you are interested in this year's FedCup Golf Tournament, please let us know by indicating your interest in an e-mail to: <fedcup@kalido.com> [ mailto:fedcup@kalido.com ]
Once we have an idea of how many folks might be interested in golf, we will get back to the group with specific details.

Tom Whalen, face of York food pantry, remembered
By Joanne Terrasi
news@seacoastonline.com
June 11, 2010 2:00 AM
YORK, Maine — Friends said he was a kind, compassionate man who would never let anyone go hungry, cared individually for people and gave help with the utmost respect.
York resident Tom Whalen, best known for his work as director of the York Community Food Pantry, died Tuesday at the age of 73 from cardio-pulmonary fibrosis.
The food pantry is one of the programs under the auspices of the York Community Service Association, which provides social service programs to people in need. The YCSA is funded by proceeds from the York Community Thrift Shop, another YCSA program. Whalen was the face of the pantry initiative.
Reached Thursday, Whalen's son, Christopher, said in the last few days, he has been stopped everywhere by people saying, "Are you Chris? What a great man your dad was."
"He was an unbelievable man. He had six kids and made each one of us feel special," Chris said.
Whalen is also survived by nine grandchildren, one great-grandson and his wife of 50 years, Pat.
York resident Tom Carnicelli, former YCSA president, said Pat was involved in bookkeeping for the pantry, coordinated events to show appreciation to the many volunteers, and was "very important to running the show."
Whalen had a large staff of volunteers, many of whom are retired senior citizens. Carnicelli said Whalen made them feel good about what they were doing.
Former food pantry co-director and volunteer Francis Koerschner said Whalen was always smiling and he embodied caring.
"He leaves such a legacy that it feels like he is still alive," she said.
Marianne Quinn, also a former pantry co-director, said Whalen was surrounded by women at the pantry and as a result, was frequently the butt of well-meaning jokes, which "he took in good nature," she said.
"He will be missed by a lot of people," said Lorna Ryan, YCSA's family service director.
Ryan worked closely with Whalen in the community and said he "cared individually" about all of the organization's clients. Those clients have been "devastated" to hear of his passing, she added.
Two years ago, when Whalen became director of the pantry, the program merged with the YCSA, according to Paul Salacain, president of the YCSA board of directors. Salacain said Whalen went out of his way to "make things happen."
"He continued in such a way that people recognized the pantry as a kind of brand," Salacain said.
Carnicelli said Whalen was "skillful and competent in getting cash donations and food from various organizations" and kept the pantry well stocked.
"He managed to get donations and his picture in the paper almost every week," Carnicelli said.
The thing that impressed Carnicelli the most about Whalen was "he did a tremendous amount of good in a matter-of-fact way."
"He just did it. That's Tom Whalen," he said.
Calling hours for Whalen will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday at Lucas
& Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York. A funeral Mass will be
celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Christopher Church, York.

I just got a call a few minutes ago from Alan Badger, Lily's husband telling me that Lily passed away this morning. She was diagnosed 3 weeks ago with pancreatic cancer and succumbed to that early today. As we all know, she was an amazing person and a huge part of the Applicon experience.
For those of you that are around, there will be services this week. Check the paper for exact details but Alan indicated that the wake would be Weds from 4-8 at the Lane funeral home in Winchester and the funeral on Thursday at 10AM at St Mary's church...

Bill,
Received your message and kind remarks - thank you.
I will not be there, as I am sailing the Maine coast on a 42' ketch.
We are moored at Rockland for the evening, and will return no sooner than next
Sunday.
As this is the last sail of the year, one must take advantage of personnel
availability and
weather - I'm sure you understand.
I am sending along a picture that you may want to place on the post reunion web
site.
Caption: Sipsey couldn't attend but says, "HELLO."
Look forward to seeing you later this year.
Best Regards,
Mike
